This might be a beginning, but it ends with the sound of steel, and the smell of blood hot and heavy in the air. It ends with Silas crashing through his mother’s honour guard like a whirlwind, Warlo on his left and Mara on his right. It ends because the guards might have experience on their side, but Silas is seventeen, and angry, and so so sad. Because he is furious, and sick with it, and for once in his life, he would like to just let go. It ends with the glint of sunlight on a sword as Silas severs his mother’s grinning head from her neck.
“It’s done,” he screams, voice hoarse with shouting and steel. “Your war is over! You’ve lost.”
(No time to mourn; not yet. Grief will come later.)
