"Dev usually waited until sleep caught him.
It was never enough.
He didn't understand why he kept trying."

Summary
"What Dev was doing wasn't wrong... sort of.
He knew that "accidentally" hurting himself by touching the stove burner, "accidentally" running into a wall, "accidentally" tripping down the stairs at school and generally hurting himself wasn't something a good kid would do.
But he wasn't lying to Peri, not really. He didn't want to lie to Peri about being hurt. That would be wrong. But if he was actually hurt, well, that was different. He wasn't lying to get attention. He was sacrificing something too. It was only fair, right?"
Or
Dev resorts to self harm because he doesn't know how to communicate his need for affection

Summary
"David let out a choked gasp, his face going pale as he stumbled back a step. "You- you think that's good first aid?"
"I, uh..." Suddenly Max felt unsure of himself, shifting his weight awkwardly. "Well... yeah?"
To Max's bewilderment, tears were welling up in the man's eyes. "It's a horrible injury! You shouldn't have to deal with this on your own!"
Wait, was David... crying? Over a little scrape? Max shifted his weight, deeply uncomfortable with the intense emotion from normally upbeat David. He'd seen the man get weepy before of course, but never like this. Never with such naked pain and concern. Over him."
For a tumblr prompt a saw that inspired me:
"Max gets a cut, not too deep, but painful and bleeding profusely, and rather than waiting for an adult he just mutters “god damn it,” while he starts cleaning/patching himself up (because he usually has to do it himself at home.) Neil watches in horror as Nikki runs off to get David, and by the time they get back, Max has already dealt with it, and can’t understand why in the world David is crying as he replaces his perfectly good bandage (made with paper towels and masking tape,) with a clean bandaid."
