Sam knew his head hurt before he knew he woke. And that consciousness had found him sooner than he’d want. His hands were bound in front of him and tied off somewhere above, elevating them enough to lose feeling even when he slowly flexed. At least nothing else hurt any more than it had after he’d taken stock from jumping out of a collapsing building into a moving helicopter. He peeked out one eye to see if there was anything worth seeing.
What the fuck.
It was a minivan, and he was trussed up like a hog ready for the Cajun microwave. Someone had shoved a blanket down between him and the seat, saving him from being jabbed by the seatbelt buckles. The car moved at a good clip, streetlights flashing by a sky that wasn’t quite as dark as when he’d left Steve’s bedside. Sam knew he hadn’t been out too long, body still in too good of shape for anything longer than a couple of hours.
The Winter Soldier had gone easy on him again.

“This is your two minute war-oh my god, what is that smell?” Torres started to say as he walked out of the tactical center into the staging area of the plane. He covered his nose and mouth with his hand, looking frantically between Sam and Bucky, before he dropped his arm and tried to pretend he hadn’t noticed anything. Torres was a good kid and beta, but he was clearly in over his head trying to mediate two alphas who were barely tolerating each other.
“He started it,” Bucky snitched, jerking his chin in Sam’s direction. He rolled his shoulders, uncomfortable in the expensive bondage gear he hadn’t anticipated wearing again when he showed up to jump down Sam’s throat.
Sam used the distraction of Torres walking between them to declare victory in the staring contest and stand first before Bucky could shoot to his feet. “Nobody invited your ass along for the ride,” Sam reminded him, honestly because he’d been more than a little surprised himself when he’d felt territorial enough over the plane, the job, or Torres to flash his dominant scent markers at Bucky. Bucky had flashed back and they’d been sitting in a skunky stew of alpha pheromones for the last hour.
