Summary
Light Yagami is bored one Friday afternoon when he stumbles across a journal called a “Death Note.” Upon realizing its true power, he panics and leaves it behind on the sidewalk.
Of course, he had forgotten that his fingerprints and handwriting were still on the notebook. When a new killer emerges using the Death Note to kill criminals, Light must catch them before anyone else does so he can save his own ass.

Summary
Japan was colonized by England in 1697. England and Scotland joined to become Great Britain in 1704. Now it is 1720.
Light Yagami was born in Japan but does not remember much of it. His family moved all the way to Port Royal, Jamaica, when he was very young. His father is an officer in the Royal Navy, but does not have the Captain rank. Born into the upper middle-class, Light lived a comfortable life. Shortly after turning 16, he fled and became a pirate. At some point during his 17th year, he became a pirate captain. Now 18, he is still reckless and inexperienced but has a fierce reputation, causing havoc and destruction.
So the Crown sends Captain Lawliet, a young, prodigious naval officer with an impressive record of arresting pirates and winning battles, to bring Light into custody. He has won the highest award possible in the Navy: the Order of Black Lions. While his methods are unorthodox and he doesn’t care much for the Navy’s strict rules, his skills are undeniable and the Royal Family allows him to do as he pleases. This man is the one all pirates fear, known by various epithets. A game of cat and mouse begins between the two young captains that will shake the Caribbean.

As the pause in the flickering light edged further on, the distant spinning of fans and the sound of exhalation from smoke pipes filled the quiet night.

And Light will be proud about it, because most of them were of his making, since Sayu fell asleep on the couch before they were done. He won’t show it, naturally. He’ll be as uninterested as L is. His demeanor won’t change one bit.
After spending every Valentine's day giving L the chocolates he doesn't want from his suitors, Light gets roped into making friendship chocolates for him. It's not like he's been avoiding his feelings for L or anything like that. It will be fine, though. Sayu has a plan.

L knows that Light Yagami is guilty. And he is forced to accept that he will never be able to prove it.
So, just this once, he decides to break his principles and go above the law. He kidnaps Light and takes him to Wammy's house.
He's sure that having the kids interact with a real-life mass murderer will be a very educational experience indeed.
Or: Light is Kira, L is sick of how easily manipulated the police are, and he secretly wants to see what will happen if he forces Light into a domestic situation with children just as intelligent as he is.
