Summary
Tommy had been left in the dark for a while. So long that he thinks that any smell other than the mildew scent that clings to the walls will send him into shock. So long his ears will bleed at the noise of anything other than the soft scurrying of the rats that live in the dungeons and the light patter of soldiers making their rounds. Most of his life has been spent in the same two rooms. The same strict schedule. Around the same few people.
Or: Tommy is a phantom hybrid who has been trapped for most his life, but it all changes when a new person is dragged into the cell across from his own.

“It’s your soulmates, baby,” his mother whispered. “They’re not here yet. You’re missing them.”
Phil knew about soulmates, of course, like he knew about dogs and flowers and the sun. He just didn’t understand how he could miss someone he’d never even met. It wasn’t fair. But, fair or not, the feeling persisted. On the good days it was like an itch he could never reach, or a limb he couldn’t fully stretch—nagging, but manageable.
On the bad days he wanted to scream and cry and smash his fists against the walls.
Phil is born with pieces missing—four of them, to be exact.

Soulmates are real in the way that magic is. It flows through people, sinking its roots into their veins and gifting them with the abilities of the cosmos. It weaves into their beings, just as real as their very souls. Magic is the power that fuels new fields of research, just as much as it is the light that glimmers in the corners of tired eyes and mischievous smiles.
Soulmates are real in the way that love is-- after all, what is love if not the most accessible form of magic? If there is a universe, she is kind enough to connect the souls that are fated to meet.
No one can deny the existence of magic, of love, of soulmarks. Soulmates are very real.
They’re just not an option for Tommy.

The stranger’s expression softened, and they gave the dragon one last glance in a ‘we’ll talk about this later’ way. “I’ll try to explain everything soon. You must be cold, why don’t you come inside?” they offered with a smile.
Tommy, without many options, accepted.

In fact, it seemed as if the person, who sounded like a boy, was actually giving a speech or something. He couldn’t be sure, it wasn’t as though he actually knew what the boy was talking about. Will wondered if the other person could hear his thoughts as well. So, Will did the only logical thing he could. He simply asked.

30 minutes, an emotional phone call to Tommy’s parents, and some tears that were totally not shed, later- Tommy is walking out of Techno’s office, a signed hall pass clutched tightly in his right hand.
As he makes his way back up the stairs to his now fifth-period class, he feels the signature annoying itch, on his left arm this time, that always accompanies a soulmate marking their body. Rolling his eyes exasperatedly, he pulls up his sleeve, expecting to find Phil’s newest lesson plan or some of Wilbur’s dumb doodles, but instead, he gets a nice surprise.
Right there, in Technoblade’s neat scrawl: “care abt u, kiddo. good luck”
Already, he can see Wilbur start to draw little, stupid, hearts around it. Phil scribbles in question marks, and writes a little ‘text me’, and underlines it twice, and Tommy knows he cares as well.
He wipes his watery eyes, smiles, and then continues his slow ascent up the flight of stairs to his next class period.

Modern-day SBI soulmate AU, where whatever marks your skin (bruises, tattoos, writing in sharpie, pen, etc.) also shows up on your soulmate's body.
