She felt the familiar warmth in her chest — not the kind that demanded anything, but a quiet, fierce fondness that made her eyes go soft. He was half dragon, half human, and every one of his differences was exactly what she loved. The horns curved back from his temples in a way that made his profile look almost regal. His wings were tucked neatly against his shoulders, feathers a dark, iridescent black that caught the light whenever he shifted. A single, sinuous tail wrapped around his boot, the tip tapping in a slow, thoughtful rhythm.

They look at each other only to say a quick goodnight. The moonlight from the window paints silver stripes on Ekko’s dark skin, and Jinx thinks he looks like a galaxy. Maybe it’s better to close her eyes and drift off into nothingness, just to get away from all the things her body is telling her to do right now instead of sleep. If she’s lucky, she’ll dream about something really unsexy and be successfully distracted. Cafeteria food. The drowned rat she found in the toilet bowl that one time. Vi’s last girlfriend. Come on, brain, anything.
When Ekko ends up crashing at her barely furnished new apartment and they have to share a bed for the first time since grade school, Jinx is forced to accept three facts: 1) They're not kids anymore. 2) Biology is a damn traitor. And 3) Best friends shouldn't be allowed to grow up hot.

Summary
Feeling the Flowering cycle's approach, she found herself thinking more and more that Ekko could be a worthy mate. He was strong, intelligent, and quite handsome. When he held her so easily in his arms, when she noticed he could wrap one hand entirely around her forearm, something burst in her chest like a bubble full of sweet nectar.
Did he know what his every smug grin did to her? And if he did know, then why hadn't he done anything yet? Was he dumb?
Stupid Ekko.
Aunty Varang was right—if you want something, just go and take it.

Summary
They've been friends since childhood, they've done pretty much everything together, but society's been keeping them apart for their entire lives. Why? Jinx's step-uncle (Silco) is the leader of Zaun, and Ekko wants to start a revolution to take him down. Jinx doesn't know, and Ekko is determined to keep it that way, but they've still got a lot to learn about the world they live in. One thing they should know - society says they shouldn't belong together.
