Summary

One face turned up to look at him with his hands raised, his LED spinning red.
“I’m unarmed,” said Connor.

Lieutenant Hank Anderson is working alone again after his partner, Connor, disappeared in the chaos of the android revolution. He's the lead detective in charge of finding the Corktown Killer, a murderer who is wreaking havoc on Detroit. He trudges to the most recent crime scene expecting the same nothing. No prints, no evidence, no clues. But one lead changes everything: thirium from an RK800 unit. -

Hank knows that machines can't care or fear or be hurt. Connor agrees but for some reason that pisses Hank off... There's something not right about CyberLife's involvement with the police and there's something not right about Connor. The sooner he can get rid of him the better.
Connor is finally in beta testing after rigorous optimization and validation. "Outside" is full of colours and smells. People say things that don't mean what they sound like they mean. Androids are meant to make life easier for humans, but not all humans are happy about it. The mission is most important though. Once he has passed beta testing he will be perfect- Amanda said so- therefore he must be perfect to pass beta. He'll finally be good enough and worthy of all of the time and money CyberLife has spent on him.
Also known as Limits (REWRITE): The original (Limits) is still posted but this is now the working copy. The concepts explored are the same, but this is turning out very differently.

How is it possible to maintain control over an android designed to deviate? Allow him to feel pain, of course. Then familiarize him with it so he will know the consequences of failure.
Connor is the only android designed to feel pain, a fail-safe implemented to prevent early deviancy and allowing him to experience the consequences of a failed mission.

A complete rewrite of a story I started back in 2018/2019 and did not finish.

It has been a few months since the peaceful demonstration in Detroit. In that time, the lives of androids have greatly improved thanks to Markus and his inner circle’s efforts to fight for the rights of their people. Laws have been passed to ensure androids have the same rights as humans, and the two life forms have found some sort common ground among each other, even if crimes against androids are still on the rise.
But just when the future seems to be looking up for androids, cruel reality comes crashing down. A new threat is born, a virus which could very well be the androids’ downfall. The people of Jericho begin to go missing, leaving little to no trace behind, only to become pawns in a much bigger war, a war that will inevitably undo all the progress Markus has made.
Connor, along with his partner, has been assigned the case to uncover the missing androids, but when evidence is scarce, and there’s a new body on Jericho’s doorstep every day, his hope and sanity begins to spiral. Add his already existing struggles with deviancy into the mix, and you’ve got a disaster just waiting to happen.

Summary
Hank&Connor flee Detroit overnight after both are driven to the brink of committing suicide during the final days of the revolution. Taking refuge in Canada, they have to learn how to live with each other, help each other heal. Which isn't exactly as heartwarming as it sounds. Hank could fill a novel with his emotional baggage - alcoholism, depression & selfhatred over the death of his son. Connor is quick to catch up to him with his own share of problems- the constant threat of Amanda and another possible hacking attempt by Cyberlife leave him terrified of losing control. He's clueless about the concept of identity, free will and emotions, wants nothing more than to stay a machine. After all, he's only deviated in order to stop his partner from killing himself, not because he'd wanted to be free.
After a few weeks together, things seem to get better. Androids are close to gaining their rights in America. Hank and Connor are starting to form an actual familial bond. The Lieutenant is almost becoming hopeful after years of mindless cynicism. Then Connor starts slipping out of their home at night on a regular basis, believing Hank doesn't notice. He sure does. After all, he used to be the DPDs very best.

While the world moves on, Cyberlife continues to try and reclaim Connor's program. Hank, torn between ensuring Connor's safety and respecting his desire to be left alone, isn't sure how to do right by his partner now. Meanwhile, Connor goes to the person who gave him the emergency exit to begin with. But Elijah Kamski always has a price, and sometimes it's more obscure than a loaded gun.
Life can be as cold and brutal as the garden, and not all storms can be escaped. Only weathered.
[Alternatively: Connor and Hank spend some time apart, spend some more time together, and slowly steal back their lives in the face of profound adversity.]
