“You pull, hard, and whoever gets the center of the wishbone when it breaks…” His mouth is dry. He can’t stop looking at Ilya’s face. “Their wish will come true.”
They stay caught there for a moment. Ilya tilts his head a bit, his beautiful mouth curved up at the corner. Shane thinks about decades of standing in the kitchen with him. He thinks about family traditions, about language built around shared space and memory. He thinks about the back of Ilya’s hand touching his cheek, about a line of spit draping between them, about ginger ale in the fridge and the shape of Ilya’s cross pressed red into his cheek after a nap. He thinks about the cryptid future in front of them, something part of him won’t believe in until he gets to see it with his own eyes. But he wants to believe. So bad.
“I know my wish.” Ilya’s eyes are alive in looking at him, the fine tremble as he takes in every part of Shane’s face.
“Me too.”
In quiet moments at the cottage and in leaving it, Shane learns how to wish for the future.
