“Really, Maddie, it’s going to be fine,” Bobby continued, when Maddie didn’t respond to his initial words of comfort. “We’ll get out of here soon.”
“I know,” she said with a sigh. Bobby’s kindness was somehow more suffocating then the elevator walls. She kind of just wished he would say what he really felt, so that Maddie knew what kind of ground she was standing on. Years of marriage to Doug had taught her that sometimes uncertainty was worse than dread. But Maddie was too much of a coward to bring it up, so she just settled on keeping up the small talk. “I just don’t like feeling trapped,” she added awkwardly.
Bobby nodded. “I get it. I hate feeling out of control.”
Or: A few months after Maddie's return from Boston, Maddie and Bobby get stuck together in an elevator. Maddie's never really had a one-on-one conversation with Bobby before, and she's convinced that the man doesn't like her very much. But when they get to talking, she realizes that she may have more in common with him than she realized.

Summary
Buffy's mom is dating this new guy, Ted. He's nice, polite, and has a good job. He also has a tendency to fly into uncontrollable fits of rage whenever Buffy does something he doesn't like. Everything in Buffy's life feels like it's falling apart and Buffy has no power to stop it. All she can do is hide out in the library with her sister so that they don't have to spend any more time at home with Ted than they already do.
Faith's living with Ms. Calendar. She took her in after Faith ran away from home. Ms. Calendar is dating a new guy, the school librarian. He's British and fancy and seems nice enough but Faith doesn't trust him. She knows from experience—years of having to put up with her mom's shitty boyfriends—that even the nicest seeming guys could be putting up a front. Ms. Calendar may be a smart lady, but Faith knows that she doesn't have the experience Faith has at identifying creeps. So she's going to make sure this guy's safe. And if it means hanging out in the library, the place where Buffy Summers, the hottest girl Faith has ever laid eyes upon, seems to basically be living in nowadays, well, that's just an unexpected perk.
