Phoenix's smile grows wider, if that's even possible, and his eyes shine with the unequivocal gleam of a man whose wildest dreams are coming true. He bounces exuberantly down the sidewalk as Miles huffs, rolls his eyes, and follows.
"Here we are!!!" Kay sings in front of the glass door. "I'm PUMPED. Are you ready, Mr. Edgeworth?"
"It's merely an eye exam, you fools."

Summary
In a sense, forgoing shaving consistently altogether is a logical progression. The toughest case of all just took a wrecking ball to everything Phoenix built for three years. Where there was once no time to spend on keeping the clean, professional look, now there is simply no reason.
What does not make logical sense is the way staring at Phoenix’s prickly jaw scrambles Miles’s insides. The joints in his fingers tingle and there’s molten lava sinking from the pit of his stomach to his ankles.
Such a strong reaction surely means Miles has an opinion on this change. He is full of opinions and they are often better off being kept inside his head until he gets behind the prosecutor’s bench. Snarky comments are easier to generate than greetings more often than not.
Not a single jeer comes to mind. Miles’s tongue darts out to wet his lips.

Summary
At ten years old, Miles had woken up alone in a hospital bed on December 28th and been told that his father was dead. The memory had stuck with him like bloodstains on a white dress shirt, but it hadn't exactly been a surprise. Some part of him had known the moment he had woken up alone that his father was gone.
The same bone-deep inexplicable knowing could not be said of Phoenix's confession. There was no part of Miles Edgeworth that had even remotely expected to hear those words, on that day or any other. He had long ago resigned himself to the idea that his feelings would never be reciprocated. The realization that apparently he had been completely wrong this whole time refused to sink in.

In a moment of bravery and emptiheadedness, Phoenix confesses his feelings to Miles. How can Miles get what he wants when he's not even entirely sure what that is?

Getting Miles Edgeworth declared innocent of both the murder of Robert Hammond AND the DL-6 case, was probably the highlight of Phoenix Wright’s career so far. In fact, he was so high on the double not-guilty verdict that he barely noticed the odd looks that Miles gave him when he and Larry were discussing the class trial from third grade. But later, when Miles comes over to pay Phoenix for being his representation, a passing comment throws their relationship, memories, and even identity into question.
