Heavy and unmoving silence was all that remained, their eyes locked onto each other with an earnest gaze. Battler could feel his heart pounding in his chest once more, a sensation that he’d almost forgotten.
“In that case, may I ask you a question, Battler-sama?”
It was an unexpected way to break the silence, one that left Battler at a loss for words. He gulped, a little flushed by her still using that honorific. Slowly though, he nodded.
“...What is magic?”
A story in which an old friend helps Battler find his way again. She's always been better at solving mysteries than him, so surely she can at least give him a hint, right?

Somehow, he was able to save her. It's a miracle-- no, magic; Bernkastel wasn't that kind. It must have been some lingering bit of magic from the Golden Land that had escaped with them. Battler's whole body trembles from exertion, but Beatrice is coughing up water on the deck of the motorboat, saved from what would have been a watery grave.
