Summary
They fight their way through the northeast. Dean’s testy, crawling out of his skin, and Sam smiles as Dean bitches, like he’s happy to have Dean moaning and complaining in the driver’s seat. It makes him want to simultaneously punch and hug Sam, infuriating beyond words.
Dean’s left knee doesn’t lock up in the cold anymore. He used to have to run the heater in the car full blast in the winter when they drove through the Maine or Michigan, when the weather dipped below freezing. He had broken it climbing a tree with Sam in North Dakota when he was ten and Sam was six and Dad made Dean swear that he wouldn’t climb the half-rotting red maple in the backyard.
But Sam had dared him, and the branch cracked and fell under his weight. The bone had never set quite right, and when the air got could enough, Dean could feel the pain cascade through the marrow like a fresh break. Now it just feels like the rest of his body, cold and unfamiliar.
Sam smiles when he turns off the heat, like it’s a blessing, but it doesn’t feel like one. He misses the ache.

Dean begins to miss the scars of his old body.
