“Dr Carter's… Dr Carter's been shot.”
Those are the words that crackle through County General's radio, but nobody truly believes them until the ambulance screeches to a halt outside the entrance, and Mark tugs open the passenger side door- only for Carter's unconscious body to list out, covered in blood from the neck down. Somebody sobs.
“I drove as fast as I could.” Zadro explains, stumbling over his words as the assembled team (Mark, Carol, Lydia, Malik) struggles to pull Carter onto a backboard. “Tried to put pressure on his neck but the blood just kept coming.”
OR
Carter is shot in S5 E17 instead of the other paramedic.

“Your scars are healing nicely, man.” Peter murmurs. He drags the sponge gently over the fresh, pink skin of the surgical sites- Reese’s skin had been fresh too, during that first bath, and Peter had been careful not to irritate it. He's just as careful now.
“Lift your leg for me? That's it. Good boy.”

Instead of going home to Gamma's, Carter recuperates from the stabbing at Benton's. Peter helps him bathe.

When at last she catches sight of him, all grievance in her voice evaporates.
“Carter?”
He's curled on his side beneath his comforter, eyes closed, evidently still deep asleep. The cause of his state is explained in the rosiness spreading across his cheeks and nose, the unmistakable flare of fever. Where the flush doesn't reach, there's instead complete pallor.
She sets her crutch against the wall and wanders to his bedside, the physician within her momentarily silenced as she stands over him, just watching the slow shallowness of his breaths.
He's sick.
OR
While Carter is renting from Kerry in S5, he falls sick one day, and things are far worse than they initially seem.
