Bookmarker's Notes
Hoooooly smokes, what a ride! There's just so much to adore in this story, but the character dynamics are a standout feature. You get a real sense of life from the characters. They all have their own perspectives of the world and their reactions are informed by their past experiences (like real people!), so every word spoken and action taken feels natural and realistic.
And the setting! The essence of the south is beautifully captured here. The scenes paint vivid landscapes imbued with living, breathing colors- much like the author's own gorgeously colored art.
The plot is wonderfully crafted, remaining engaging throughout all 55 chapters. I'm a sucker for an unreliable narrator, but to pair that with in depth dives into Ed's psyche and a thrilling muder mystery plot? And to accompany that with a story so centered on themes of love and what it is to be human? What it means to be yourself? In another age, I feel this would have been passed down via oral tradition for centuries with the likes of Homer. -

Summary
He wades in it now, eyes still open, fixed on the speckled ceiling, begging himself not to crave bomb blasts and artillery fire in his childhood bedroom. Although…there might be something beautiful about it all, Johnny supposes, those noises in the thick. The gasps in between discharge that say: I’m here, I’m a part of this song too.
After a near-fatal injury, John MacTavish finds himself back in his hometown in Scotland. Fresh off an untimely discharge, he's forced to cope with disability, his dysfunctional family, and the lingering knowledge that there are some things he's just not ready to leave behind...

Bookmarker's Notes
It is truly so hard to come up with words that encapsulate all that this fic is. Calling it a love letter to John and Simon is fitting but - argh, it's also a love story and a story full of love. It's a story about recovery and how it isn't a straight path. It's about family, the distance that can grow and the closeness that can be gained. It's about growing up in ways you may not have considered. It's about hurting and laughing and crying from both. It's about not being able to have all the words, and how in the end, that's okay. You're okay.
Thank you for sharing this story.

Summary
Soap makes a choked off noise of pure, unadulterated panic, and then he’s floating, drifting far away as his ears ring from the sound of multiple bombs going off.
When he comes to, he only gets to be happy that he’s somehow still alive for a moment, because everything hits him all at once. Pain explodes from every single part of him he can feel, and he wants to scream. He doesn’t, instead trying to take a deep breath to ground himself, but there’s rubble on top of him that’s unyielding, restricting his every breath.
His breath catches in his throat; focus, MacTavish. Assess your situation before you start panicking.
or, Soap gets trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building, and makes the (stupid) executive decision to omit that piece of information to the rest of 141. No one is happy about this when they find out.
