Summary
Hua Cheng took a step towards the bed and leaned closer, his inky eyes studying him closely. After a moment he sighed and flopped on the bed next to him, a hand lazily reaching up to Xie Lian's head and scratching it gently.
"Who am I kidding, we both know I'm going to keep you. I don't even get why...there's just something about you that won't let me throw you out the door."
Unable to say anything Xie Lian tilted his head slightly and watched as the corner of the ghost's thin lips arched a little. It was such an endearing look.

They were seated next to one another on the divan, Hua Cheng resting with one leg bent up so Xie Lian could sit with the ghost king at his back. Only tonight, instead of a scroll, it was Hua Cheng's pale arm laid bare before him on the writing desk.
“San Lang… you're sure this is what you want?” Xie Lian asked hesitantly.
“I'm certain,” Hua Cheng confirmed. “Gege asked me what I wanted for an anniversary present and it's this.”
Xie Lian scanned his would-be canvas with trepidation. The mere thought of cutting an imperfect stroke into his husband’s skin made his fingers tremble.

Summary
Xie Lian's last believer is so fervently devoted to him that he seems to think mostly in the form of prayer. That is a terrifying prospect. Xie Lian has never heard of such a case before, not even in hypotheticals, and he finds himself hoping, for his believer's sake, that there is some other explanation for this phenomenon.
Whatever the reason, a low stream of his believer's thoughts hum in the back of Xie Lian's consciousness.
His believer does not seem to be aware of it.

When Xie Lian ascends for the third time, he is welcomed back to godhood with prayers that he hadn't expected: an ongoing stream of thought from his sole remaining believer. He gathers quickly that this believer is very old, very powerful, and very, very much in love with him.
For his believer's sake, Xie Lian can cast a spell to shut the prayers out—but only if he has access to spiritual energy.

Summary
The Book 5 sequence in the Heavenly Capitol goes differently. Instead of trying to hide his treachery, Jun Wu decides to bet everything he has on breaking Xie Lian with his own hands, and rolls the dice on being able to do it before Hua Cheng can come to his rescue.
But when gambling against a ghost king, one has to be very sure of their luck--for even the very fortunate can find themselves rolling snake eyes when Crimson Rain Sought Flower plays for keeps. And the Crown Prince of Xianle is not so willing as Jun Wu would like to be made into a pawn.

Xie Lian's thoughts are cut short as Bai Wuxiang sits up, hiking the boy's hips up onto its own and pulling him flush against its crotch. Its hands leave Xie Lian’s sides and rise slowly to its own head, and the boy under it goes slack with disbelief as it starts untying the knot to its mask.
“Close your eyes, Dianxia,” Bai Wuxiang orders softly. “I’m unsightly; I do not wish for you to see my face. Not like this.”
