So Tommy can't see what's happening. He's relied heavily on sound but that's useless when the person you're listening for is just… silent.
Tommy, in his dumbass brain, considers taking a peak to see if he's still there or if he's gone now before all hell breaks loose.
The boxes flap open and crouching at the entrance is Orpheus himself. Upon seeing Tommy inside, he grins.

There were many things that Techno expected to see in his sitting room. Perhaps an exhausted Phil crashed on his couch after a painfully long flight. Maybe an assassin come to try their hand at taking his head again. Maybe one of his old handlers, from the life that he was so desperately trying to forget.
None of those were what he was presented with.
Instead it was a small, shivering bundle curled up under the cloak he hadn’t noticed was missing from its spot, a fire that he hadn’t started burning in the fireplace. It was small enough to perhaps be a wolf, one of the viciously smart things that had followed him home before. If it weren’t for the latent magic rolling off of the thing, he might’ve believed it. But no – whatever had found its way into his home was magical, and powerful as hell, too.

Tommy is born by creation of a god and deals with some crazy-ass powers due to it. His family being villains is hardly an issue when a single touch makes him mimic people's powers - his family doesn't know that though.

New L’Manburg was beautiful during the winter. The floating lanterns that illuminated its quaint little wooden roads made all the little ice crystals that covered the whole scenery glitter. The surface of the lake that had filled in the crater Wilbur had left behind was frozen, although the clear water underneath was still visible. Schools of clown fish swam through the corals, salmon rushed by in a hurry to get upstream, cods lazily explored the extensive kelp forest down there at a relaxed pace, and glow squids offered a light spectacle like no other.
It was a pity, Tommy thought, that he didn’t have the time to take in all of that beauty.
For one thing, he was pretty sure that he wasn’t allowed back into the country he’d helped to found yet. Wanted posters with his face drawn on them were still hanging on the one bulletin board that existed in the town center. They were faded and a couple had been ripped up, but there had been no attempt to officially remove them. For another, well, he was there because he’d heard whispers of a certain event taking place on that day, and he didn’t want to miss it.

Tommy didn't know when he became so pathetic.
He didn't know when he let everyone begin to believe that he was just a mortal, sixteen-year-old boy who could barely hold a sword, much less win hundreds of thousands of wars with just his bare hands and a handful of soldiers at his side. Tommy didn't know when he let everyone believe that he was just a poor little boy, abandoned by his family and left in the hands of a manipulative man who never had the guts to even show his face. Tommy didn't know when he let them believe that he could be pushed around by a man so pathetic that he had to wear a mask, just to separate himself from his crimes and misdeeds; a man who wore a mask just so he could make himself feel more like a god and less of what he actually was: a disgusting, pathetic, weakling of a man who took joy in stroking his ego by manipulating helpless children.
Tommy didn't know when he let everyone think he was so weak.
But what Tommy did know, however, was that he was sick of it.
