Summary
In an alternate timeline, the Guardians lost to Pitch Black 300 years ago during the Dark Ages. Now the Nightmare King rules unchallenged in absolute darkness.
The gaurdians are shells of themselves, sustained by mere hundreds of believers in a stagnant world. Sandy languishes in a warded cell while his dream sand is harvested and corrupted to fuel Pitch's power. Tooth hangs chained in the dungeons, her mini fairies caged nearby, forced to witness Pitch destroying every child's tooth—every precious memory—melting the capsules to forge his throne, artifacts, and a cursed currency enslaving humanity's hope.
But Pitch preserved one capsule: Jackson Overland's teeth. He knows the Man in the Moon planned 300 years ago for this boy to become Jack Frost, the newest Guardian. Now a neutral spirit quietly disrupting Pitch's empire, Jack has become an unexpected thorn in the Nightmare King's side.
Pitch sees opportunity. With Jack's stolen memories as bait, he'll corrupt the winter spirit and bring him into darkness. After all, what pairs better than cold and dark?
But Pitch may have underestimated a spirit who's spent 300 years alone, and Guardians who refuse to stop believing—even in their darkest hour.

Summary
Ten years have passed since Pitch attempted a nightmare take over. Jack is given a task by the Man in the Moon. He is to enter Pitch's domain and try to save Pitch from himself. He will not be allowed back into the world above or able to resume his Guardian role until Pitch agrees to reform.
Stranded alone in the dark caves of Pitch's prison cell, Jack must find a way to bring Pitch Black back into the light. What he doesn't count on is learning about what fear really is, learning who Pitch really is, and realizing that the only way to get Pitch to reform is to offer himself up as a consolation prize.
Memories start to surface of a life he doesn't remember ever having, they start to speak and communicate as Pitch begins to open up. Everything starts to come together. The only problem? Jack starts learning to love fear.
