No matter how many years have passed, no matter the disappointment and resentment and hurt between them, no matter how much he might like to pretend otherwise – Anakin might still know him better than any other person in the world.
There had been a time when Obi-Wan showed him all the soft, vulnerable pieces of himself, safe in the knowledge that Anakin would cradle them softly in his palms and protect them from harm. Years ago, Anakin used to proclaim he’d rather die than allow any harm to come to Obi-Wan; ardently, repeatedly, genuinely. Back then, Obi-Wan had believed him.
He knows all too well, then, that the way Anakin twists the knife nowadays is a choice. It’s a punishment he knows he deserves – he broke Anakin’s heart first, after all.
