Summary
When Dex wakes up, it's still pitch dark and silent, save the traffic outside. He's confused, at first, as to why he's awake in the middle of the night, but it only takes a second for his bleary consciousness to clear. Nursey is pressed right up against his back, face against the back of Dex's neck, and his arm is wrapped around Dex's waist, hand pressed flat against the bare skin of his stomach.
Nursey and Dex end up sharing a bed during a roadie, and the middle of the night holds an unexpected turn of events.

Tarquin also hasn’t been at the Safehouse in five days now; hasn’t spoken to Ashur in all that time either and not sent word to anyone about why he’s staying away.
But Ashur knows.
Ashur has known since the first night Tarquin didn’t show up, because there could only be two reasons: either Tarquin’s gotten in trouble somehow, or he’s avoiding Ashur.

His stupid dumbass match had killed somebody or joined the Venatori or become a monk or something and now Tarquin was probably never going to meet them.

“By the hells, Shadowheart, she’s taking the thing for a bloody walk,” Wyll says from his tent.
“A walk,” Shadowheart repeats, crossing her arms. “Why?”
“I assume the animals of this world require some amount of exercise if they’re not to collapse under the weight of their own atrophying muscles,” Lae’zel says. “But you wouldn’t know, would you? Do the disciples of Shar pre-kill their pets so they can skip right to the loss?”

Dex takes care of him in so many ways that Nursey can’t even name them all. Not only with coffee and cleaning and handy work, he just cares. He wants to know how Nursey is, checks in on him; there’s a touch of love behind it all that makes Nursey delirious and hopeful if he thinks about it for too long.
Dex blinks a few times before his eyebrows pull together in thought. “What if I like taking care of you?”

“No,” Dex says, not looking up from his homework, the moment that Nursey bursts through the door of the basement bungalow. The man has at least finally learned to knock first, though he never actually waits for Dex to answer.
“I didn’t even say anything yet,” Nursey pouts.
Dex keeps his eyes fixed firmly on the textbook on his desk, refusing to glance back over his shoulder and see whatever stupid expression Nursey is probably making at him. Nursey has a full arsenal of expressions at his disposal that all seem tailormade to chip away at Dex’s steady resolve. And it’s been getting harder and harder over the years not to let anyone see that, especially Nursey.
“You didn’t have to,” Dex says. “I could hear you psyching yourself up on your way down the stairs.”
