So it’s only after they’ve been making out long enough that she has no idea what the movie they were half-watching is about, after both their shirts are off and Mark is tugging at her belt loop, looking to her for confirmation, that she cringes, “We can’t . . . do anything, I’m on my period.”
“Oh,” Mark says. “Okay, yeah, no problem.” He moves his hands away from her hips, settles them back higher up on her waist, and kisses her again.

For all the catastrophizing Mark did on the drive here, he didn’t even consider that it might be an ability-related crisis, but Caleb’s power feels . . . weird. Inaccessible. Like an electrified fence: Mark can still feel it humming somewhere beneath his skin, but he can’t get past this weird barrier and harness it.
“Are you hurt?” he demands. He already asked, but Caleb didn’t fucking answer him.
This time, Caleb shakes his head. Says again, “I did something really stupid,” and reaches into his jacket pocket, pulls out a vial with shaking hands, holds it out to Mark without looking him in the eye.

Summary
Alex doesn’t speak when he finds Reggie. Instead, he just sits down on the paving beside him, legs hanging over the drop to the sand. Ahead, the ocean crashed down onto the beach, before withdrawing with a quiet sound.
When Alex finds Reggie, he's not entirely sure what to expect. Reggie is rarely morose, but sometimes he is a little quiet. It's all Alex can do to be there, to wait, and just hope that it's enough.

Luke’s laughing, despite himself, as he waves them out the door, but as soon as he turns back to face the studio, the grin drops off his face. Because Bobby’s still sitting perched on the arm of the couch where he’d been during rehearsal, his guitar balanced on his lap, chewing on his thumbnail. His eyes are a little glassy, a little unfocused, trained somewhere in the middle distance. As Luke watches, he moves his hand, and a bead of crimson forms on his thumb before splashing onto the body of his guitar.
“Shit,” Luke says from across the room. “Bobby, you’re bleeding.”

Having just finished her freshman year of college, it feels a bit jarring to be doing this again. As though coming home to Whitetail wasn’t jarring enough. The busy excitement of the city was something she had taken a while to get used to, but that had become comforting once she settled into it. Now the bleakness of her hometown leaves her brain itching with boredom. An uneasy sort of emptiness she wishes she could say she hasn’t felt before.
