Dali let an amused breath at that. “Gerhard, how can you say something so florid so unabashedly?”
Because he knew a thing or two about it. Ever since they were fifteen.
Gerhard realized Dali would be trouble from day one. What he didn't expect was for that trouble to morph into something far worse than loathing over the years.

Gerhard flicks his cigarette, ash catching on the breeze. Dali can feel his hesitation like a physical force, some unvoiced question tensing his shoulders. It’s a split-second decision from there.
He leans in just as Gerhard opens his mouth. “Don’t you want to get out of here?”
Limned by the city’s warm glow, Gerhard’s look of surprise is even sweeter than usual.
The war is over. Slowly but surely, the city fills again - and with it Dali stumbles across someone he hasn't seen in a while.

Topaz appeared from the stage, having just finished checking their material one more time. Aventurine gave her a thumbs up, and she nodded before going back to announce them.
It was now or never.
They made their way to the stairs leading up to the wooden platform.
Boothill’s hand moved from her back to her fingers, and he held them gently in his own.
Time to fly, birdie, he mouthed at her. Robin’s wings fluttered approvingly at that.
