Summary
The Gods unsatisfied with how things ended for Toothless and Hiccup decide to send them back with all of their memories. Hiccup who'd become jaded from the loss of his best friend, doesn't know what to make of being returned to the past. He does know that he won't make the same mistakes from before. Can someone get through to the jaded Hiccup as he hides on an island far from other humans? Hiccup and Toothless wake up the day after he cut Toothless free of the bola that injured Toothless's tail.
They runaway from Berk and set up Dragon's Edge as a Dragon Sanctuary. With his memories of the past he is able to better prepare for the fight against the Red Death and rescue dragons. Little does he know that he's drawn the attention of someone from his past earlier.

Summary
When Hiccup is chosen to kill a dragon as the end test in front of his village, he runs away. He ensures the dragons in the Arena are free to escape as well. He takes to the islands on the edge of trade lanes in case he needs to trade with people to survive. It is far from where Berk Vikings or Hunters go to hunt dragons. Hiccup uses the peace to learn to survive on his own as well as learning Dragonese from Toothless. There they make a home for themselves and they help dragons heal from injuries. Beyond a handful of trades with trusted traders, Hiccup has almost no human contact. Until someone washes up on the beach shore badly injured and he brings them back to his hut.

For the last two years, a figure on the back of dragons had been a thorn in Viggo's side. It was always the same dragon and the same rider, but no matter what, they couldn't catch the man who was costing them so many shipments of goods and supplies. Anytime the Hunters were in the perceived territory with dragons they were raided by more than just one. More than once while the dragons worked on releasing their kin, the rider would jump onto one of the ships. They were a small little thing, and a few times, they had gotten their hands on him. Only to have the Rider's dragon attack and get his Rider out of the sticky situation. The only information they had on the Rider was that he was a 'he', he had auburn hair and pale. Nothing else. Not even his damn name and it irritated the hell out of Viggo.
Then as quickly as he'd come, the Rider was gone. No raids, no sight of him in months. Until the Nightfury was seen carrying what appeared to be a bleeding body. Viggo gave the order to bring them down alive. Only to find a badly injured teenager who had a new amputation and an exhausted dragon.

It's been a while since Hiccup just disappeared from Berk. The night before his final trial he was there and then... He wasn't. Nor did the dragons in the arena.
Nothing never made sense, but they were so busy grieving their (recently) beloved Hiccup to put one and one together.
Five years later, things barely changed. Although dragons ceased their attacks, vikings kept trying to hunt them, looking for their total extinction.
That is until a mysterious creature appears. Rumored to have a skin darker than night itself. Nobody has ever seen it clearly. Never attacks directly at them. It just liberates dragons from traps, takes the hurt ones and then vanishes in the night.
