Summary
Mike's life is split in three categories; the life he should have, the life he wants to have, and the life he has to have. Currently, he's living in limbo between all three; he'll never have that white-picket fence and suburban wife, not when the only girl he could try to love has left him, and while he's finding it harder to live the life he has to have— the life where he hides himself so deep, not even the people he loves know who he is— he'll never get the life he wants, either.
Limbo sucks, to put it simply. He's so close to what he wants (which is Will, no matter how hard he tries to shove it down) but he just can't push past that barrier and talk to Will, not when everything he does always feels wrong.
But, maybe, Mike might come to learn that what he wants isn’t so bad, after all.
(Or; Mike's struggle with his internalized homophobia— among other things, including the concept of free will, Robin Buckley's mildly terrifying presence, and wanting things Mike's sure he doesn't deserve— structured around the five stages of grief. You can mourn a life you'll never live, and you can mourn someone you haven't actually lost.)

Will rubbed the back of his neck, a warm smile on his face. “Stop it, Mike.”
Mike shook his head, still smiling big. “Don’t be embarrassed! You saved my life! I don’t know what I’d do without you. What any of us would do without you.”
“Really, Mike, stop it,” he spit out, his soft expression suddenly becoming sour. The sound of his voice was harsh, a tone that Will had never used towards Mike. He was taken aback.
“Oh, uh, I’m sor-“
“Can you stop flirting with me? I don’t like you like that, I never will.”

Now, someone walked into the room. A boy, awkwardly standing at the side of his bed, looking over him worriedly. His hair was brown and scruffy, and he had big baby doe eyes and a yellow-and-blue horizontally-striped shirt like a cartoon character. The window was lighting him up like he was important to Mike’s narrative. The curtains are blue, thought Mike, this boy is light. I love metaphors. Maybe he was high on the pain meds. Upon seeing him, Mike felt a great affection, a great peace. Plus, he had long eyelashes. Mike almost giggled to himself. He was definitely a little high.
“Hi.” breathed Mike.
“Hi.” he said, hesitating.
“We’re friends?” Mike asked hopefully.
Or: During the Party's final battle with Vecna, Mike is gravely injured and loses his memories. He wakes up in a hospital only remembering a handful of inconsequential little things, like how much he loves a boy who seems like light.

Will's been alive for... a while. He stopped keeping track a long time ago. He's got one final tradition keeping him somewhat tethered to a mortal's idea of time, and it's this: once a year, he revisits a lovelock and remembers, for a moment, the last time he allowed himself to become attached to someone he was always destined to leave behind. Someone he still loves, despite the time that's past, despite the mortality that's surely claimed him.
Even more than a century later, Will's imagination always likes to torture him this time of year with flashes of dark hair and a familiar jacket in crowds and store windows. With all the time that's passed, he doesn't let himself hope the way he used to, a lifetime ago.

Summary
Two years after Vecna finally met his end, the Party moves onto College. Trauma-bonding has it's positives, and all six members of their party stick together through the transition.
Now, how did he get here, Will Byers wonders. Never in his life would he imagine walking into his and Mike’s shared apartment with his best friend in the lap of another person.
At first, Will just assumed that Mike and his hookup came back to the apartment for the first time ever, and the girl liked having scrawny boys in her lap. He’s not one to assume, okay?! Just because he’s gay, doesn’t mean he can judge heterosexuals!
He would have brushed it off and snuck back out the door, but as he turned to leave- their cat meowed loudly, disrupting Mike and his chair.
Will looked up, prepared to introduce himself to the girl and apologize to his best friend, when there was definitely not a girl there.
In fact- the opposite of a girl was bracing Mike firmly around his thighs and waist. A bulky brunet glared at him from underneath the curly-haired boy, clearly unhappy at being disturbed.
Will Byers moved onto college fully expecting typical teenage shit- not Mike Wheeler kissing boys.

Will’s hand lifted as though he might reach, eyes suddenly bright with unshed tears. “You think I haven’t tried to hate you?!”
That stopped Mike from saying the thing on the edge of his tongue, the thing they both knew very well here in this hospital room.
Will’s voice rose. “You think I haven’t tried? Every time you act like this, like you don’t even like me at all! Like, we haven’t been friends for almost our whole lives! When you throw me away! You don’t get to decide how I feel, Mike. You don’t get to make me the villain in whatever story you’ve made up in your head!”
Mike stared at him, jaw tight, throat constricted. He didn’t know what to say—only that whatever he managed would probably be inadequate.
Will was trembling, fists clenched at his sides. “I’ve spent years trying. You didn’t care. After what you did, I tried to convince myself our entire friendship was fake! And you know what? It didn’t work! Because I do care. I’ve cared my entire fucking life. And that doesn’t just stop, no matter what. I can’t hate you, no matter what you do.”
Mike’s throat felt like hot glass.

First it’s her arms that go limp, then her chest stutters to a stop before her head hits the floor with a crack. She's facing him, her eyes unfocused and cracked open. He knows she’s dead when her body starts to turn to smoke, leaving with the wind.
Her blood paints the ground, writing the prophecy with it.
He knows he’s crying. But there’s no noise at all. He stays staring at the body of his dead sister until it’s all gone.
(It’s not actually tears anyway, they never hit the ground. It’s the blood that fades. If he were to look at his face, he knows it would match Nancy’s neck)
Or, Mike’s a prophet that almost no one believes, this changes both everything and nothing.

Summary
“My name is Michael Wheeler, I’m 16 years old, and a year ago today, my best friend lost his mind.”
Mike Wheeler hasn't talked to Will Byers in months. It's been a whole year since his best friend of 12 years went insane- Spitting out nonsense about monsters and other dimensions. No one saw it coming, and it has never sat right with Mike.
A day after this awful anniversary, though, Mike receives a visitor: A girl who calls herself Eleven.Eleven steps into Mike's mind and shows him the truth: Will was never the crazy one after all. Somehow, by some great means, Vecna has erased any memory of the Upside Down from all the minds of Hawkins.
Mike, Will, and El restore the original party to face the terrors of Vecna's influence once again, but when Vecna starts altering Will's own memories as a last attempt at power, things get confusing.
Now the question is: What more does Vecna want? Will Mike and the others be able to help Will hold on much longer? And in a reality where it's possible to have your memory altered at random, how is Will supposed to know what's real... and what's a trick of the mind?Bookmarked by Pythoness
