Will Graham's world didn't fundamentally change when his therapist, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, was found guilty on several counts of murder and cannibalism. A minor set-back, but Will was a resilient person. He continued with his education and graduated top of his class with a major in psychology and a minor in soulmate studies. He dated. Sometimes. Not often. He earned his doctorate and continued on with his residency under Dr. Bloom.
He was then kindly, and in the most polite manner possible, kidnapped by a cult of Hannibal-worshiping followers.
Placed before their newly freed leader, Will struggles to understand their motives, although when he looks into the eyes of his old therapist, he realizes something rather unsettling:

While they would very much like to help the innumerable worlds that they doomed to the predation of the Dread Powers, they don’t have much practice at influencing reality through spooky books, monsters, or spacetime manipulation. That doesn’t mean they don’t try their best.
