“The only reason you would kiss me would obviously be if you were trying to pretend we were something we weren’t—like maybe you lied to someone and you need them to believe that we’re dating—so I should’ve played along; that’s my bad, dude. I was just… I mean, shocked is putting it lightly.” Riz laughs lightly.
“I didn’t lie to someone by saying we were dating,” Fabian says carefully. “Because that wouldn’t be a lie.”
Riz’s cheeks turn dark with blood. “Wh—what?”
Fabian studies the strange way that Riz seems instantly flustered. He doesn’t understand it but he does find it charming at the very least and distractingly attractive at most. “Am I not allowed to tell people who my boyfriend is?”

or: A lie that Fabian tells while under the effect of Devil's Honey has him convinced that he's dating Riz Gukgak. Riz decides to go along with the lie in an effort to investigate the mystery, but he surprises himself when real feelings begin to form in the process.

“I’d never stop doing it if I could.”
“Me, too.” Fabian presses his lips against the top of Riz’s head, the easy exchange of affection coming as naturally and casually as the breaths that leave his lungs. “Let’s.”
“Let’s what?”
“Never stop.”
Riz can hear the grin in Fabian’s voice. He’s helpless to keep himself from smiling in return. In the past, at the sound of forever, he might’ve been scared. Today, though, he doesn’t ask if Fabian is sure. He doesn’t worry that he might change his mind one day and leave Riz behind him. He isn’t even concerned about the world tearing them apart because it has tried a hundred and one times and never succeeded. They have forever and he knows that for a fact, as inarguable as the laws of nature. It’s everything he could ever ask for and more than he could’ve ever expected.

or: In the all-time finale of pirates-verse, Riz and Fabian are offered a chance to see their future.

Summary
Once Riz gets past the initial shock and terror at things changing, there’s a part of him that’s just want. That selfish, greedy part of him that he’s had to learn how to quiet, to stop focusing on the things he’s scared he’ll lose or that he’ll never have when he’s so spoiled with the things he does have now, it hears all the quiet promises in Fabian’s words and wants to clutch it all tight, no takebacksies. He wants to be wanted. He wants to bask in however Fabian wants to express his love the same way that he’s always loved it when Fabian expresses his love. He wants to not be scared of the thought of it. He wants to want it. He might want it? He wants to know if he does want it.
(Or, discovering your best friend of over a decade is in love with you might bring some confusion, some complications, and plenty of recontextualizing, but it might also bring so much happiness.)
