In Romans, three love stories unfold simultaneously: all three permeated by terror and guilt, as each demands the renunciation of both God and family in order to be.
The first romance, the novel's focus, involves Caesar Zeppeli, who seeks a woman with whom to fulfill his dream of marriage. His path towards this goal encounters two obstacles: the first, which Caesar refuses to confront, is his own homosexuality. The second, onto which he casts all blame, is the deranged love to which he surrenders with every kiss shared with Joseph Joestar.
The next romance, traced through Suzi Q and Maria Zeppeli, explores familial dysfunction and marriage as a trap that closes in on women. Love is interrupted by "I have to flee from here" and by an escape whose outcome only worsens everything.
The third romance unfolds between Niccolò Zeppeli, Caesar’s older brother, and Julieta Esposito, the novice for whom he attends Mass every Sunday. For her, the choice allows no middle ground: continued servitude to God or stepping away.
In this story, love is lived through shame, rage, timidity, fear, and guilt. But above all, love is lived with tenderness; as love.
