He sits at his desk and thinks to himself about the story he can never tell.
It isn't the story of the mage; that, perhaps, is the easiest story to tell. An acceptable one, a story of love and loss, of power and politics, of magic and monsters.
The stories he grew up on are the same stories he's doomed to tell now. Of supernatural entities and learned helplessness.
No, the story he can never tell is one he's never seen or read before. One that could never have a happy ending.
It goes like this:
Four boys playing a tabletop role-playing game in a basement. Loud, chaotic, wild. There is a distinct air of youth surrounding them. They are untouched by trauma and unharmed by life.

Hopper rubbed his face, looking suddenly tired. "Look, I know you think I'm being unreasonable. But I'm trying to do what's best for you. What if..." He paused, eyes looking back and forth between El and Will. He was thinking hard about something. "What if we modified the rule slightly?"
"Modified how?" El asked.
"You can date… when Will does."
El and Will’s stomachs both dropped.
"What?!" They burst out in unison.
"You heard me. When your brother starts dating someone, you can date too. That way I know you're both mature enough to handle it."

No one ever talks about what happens after.
No one told Will that the monsters would never really leave him. No one told Will how being taken and possessed would sit in his stomach like a coiled-up vine. No one told Will how he'd never feel like himself again.
No one told Will what to do, now that the worst is over and he doesn't feel any better. No one told Will how to handle the after, the in-between of not dying and still feeling dead.
No one told Will how to feel alive, so he figures it out for himself.
(Or; A study of how Will handles— or doesn't handle— the aftermath of what happens to him.)
