When JJ’s phone rang yesterday Kiara hadn’t really thought anything of it. She’d been unloading the dishwasher, not really paying attention except to shoot a curious glance over her shoulder at the noise to see JJ frowning at his screen before accepting the call and lifting the phone to his ear.
Until he had gone completely still listening to whoever was on the other end. He’d stayed still for about ten seconds after the call had ended before he’d become a blur of motion moving through their rental like a hurricane. She doesn’t think he’s really stopped moving since.

'The huge oak at the end of the street is gone when she finally turns onto the cul de sac where she grew up. She knew it would be. It came down in a storm about a month ago and it had been the major topic of discussion when her mother had called.
It had been reassuring, in a way. She could relax in the knowledge that the most exciting thing happening in Hawkins was the tree at the end of the street managing to fall in the exact right direction so that it didn’t take down any houses with it and how long it was taking to pick up the pieces. That was until her mother had somehow managed to segue from ‘they’re still cleaning up down at Millers' into ‘your father isn’t doing well and I think you should come home.’

“You okay?”
Kiara’s voice, oozing with concern, pulls him out of his thoughts. He turns towards her, sees the look in her eyes – the way she’s trying her best to hide her emotions from him, and failing miserably at it.
“Yeah,” he says, because she doesn’t need to worry about him, that’s not her job. “Yeah, I’m okay.”
He doesn’t offer anything else. Leans back against the window, goes back to looking at the street side speeding past. He doesn’t quite know what to do with her emotions.
JJ has just said goodbye to his dad for one last time. He is very much not okay.
