But when a strange conspiracy begins closing in on Al-Haitham and threatening the precarious balance of their daily lives, Kaveh finds himself having to reevaluate the nature of their relationship and reckon with the ghosts of the past.

There’s never really a good time, way, or reason to tell Kaveh about his long-lived, amoral, exiled, criminal ex-partner — who, Al-Haitham will note, was not any of those things at the time they were involved.

“Surprised?” The girl asked she was smiling like she usually was, but this time there was no happiness in it. There was no sweet trill or sunny laugh. This smile was dark, bitter as if every feeling of hate, suffering, and exhaustion had concentrated into a minute twitch of her light lips.
“Don’t worry, you were supposed to be.” She moved a strand of hair behind her ear.
They wished they could see her eyes, those bright welcoming eyes that she had finally grown confident enough to show them, but these weren’t the shining emerald they had grown used to, they were acidic. A soul piercing harlequin shade that kept them in place.
“Izumi…” A voice called out softly, completely and utterly broken, whose it was no one could tell, though they had a good guess. “Why?”
