Jamie doesn’t know why he kept it. He’d always had this thing, with having things in his mouth. He’d chew the corners of blankets or bite his nails, gnaw on pens until ink exploded on his tongue, he’d stick his thumb in his mouth absently when he was falling asleep and wake up with drool on his pillow and a wrinkly fingertip.
Keeley got it for him. Maybe that was why. She’d been taking the piss when she got it, because she knew Jamie’s ears went red every time she brought it up and she was a fucking sadist like that. She wasn’t being mean or nothing, never told Jamie she thought it was gross and that he needed to grow up because what self-respecting twenty-three-year-old still sucked their thumb on the regular, but one day she’d presented him with a little blue boxed wrapped with a shiny blue ribbon with a Cheshire fucking grin.

Summary
The rain pours down, and Roy marks the passage of time only by the pages he’s turned and the number of times he’s stood up to refill his tea.
It is, quite possibly, one of the loveliest days he’s spent in recent memory.
He’s just closing in on the final chapters when there’s a knock at the door. Roy tips the book against his chest and waits to see if the interruption will go away. He counts to 35, but there’s another knock.
He sighs and hauls himself up to answer the door.
Jamie is standing on the other side, sopping wet and holding his Richmond duffel bag over one shoulder. However frustrated he’d been a moment ago, it melts away and he feels himself smiling.
“Look what the fucking cat dragged in."
