Taggie turns back to Rupert to ask, “are you really doing this?”
He seems almost reluctant when his eyes meet hers, a sombre weight to them as he considers her question.
“It’s about time this old man does something with his life. Don’t you think, Tag?” His voice comes out weary, only a thread of humour beneath it.
Taggie grips the napkin in her lap, twisting it in her hands without really looking at it. “I don’t know… I thought you were doing great things with your life already.”
He gives a huff of a laugh, deprecating, as he looks out at the restaurant. “I wouldn’t go that far.”
When Taggie moved to the city at eighteen, the last thing she'd expected was her family friend Rupert Campbell-Black to help her settle in, and subsequently become her best friend, and her his.
She also hadn't expected to return from her month-long holiday visiting her grandmother to have her whole world turned upside down, when the Rake of Rutshire announces he's engaged, and asks her to be his best maiden for the event.
