Fate is what fundamentally determines a person, what they will go on to do and what their life is fated to be. This cannot be changed, no matter what one may try.
There has only ever been three exceptions to this.
For one of them, their fate is now duty. It is the knowledge of what they are supposed to be and memories of things, that do not matter to its role.

His living heart had hurt, and the new one felt strange: he could feel the clockwork and the gears in his chest where there had once been nothing but messily squeezing muscle, and at that first tickticktick he felt the sick swooping rightness of it so strongly that every moment on either side of it went white with euphoria.
