Summary
After years of marriage when Sheng Shaoyou dies, he doesn’t expect to wake up. Certainly not on the day he would meet Huo Yong and Shen Wenlang. The Agency will not falter, he tells himself. It gets him through: the long days waiting, the conversations with Genichirou, the gentle anxiety that seeps into him when he gets no news. When what little news he does get has the potential to be a lie to throw him off balance.
The Agency will not break, he tells himself, firmly, when Genichirou steps in to toss a familiar set of glasses on the table.
"Before you ask, he's fine," Genichirou says, too casual for the situation. He drops into the chair across from Fukuzawa and pours them both sake. Fukuzawa does not drink.
"He went to you," Fukuzawa says, quietly, "because I trusted you."

Fukuzawa should probably let Ranpo sleep. He should probably be asleep himself. Instead, he’s fist-deep in the kind of thoughts that have no business being tempted—watching Ranpo sprawled pretty and oblivious beside him, wanting far too much. One touch turns into more, and then too much, and by then he’s too far gone to stop. Ranpo’s pliant, sleepy little noises don’t help one bit.

He’d only read a few stories like that, but he was sure that it wasn't happening to him. He knew that his father was going to die. His illness had been terminal and they’d discussed it at length before Allan got too sick. “B-But my friend will be home soon. Is this real?”
