Feeling like he is on thin ice at the hospital after the Match Day debacle, John Carter says nothing when he begins to feel sick during his shift. He thinks it's just the flu. He doesn't want to make a big deal out of it. When Benton asks if he's okay, he insists that he's fine.
He's not fine, and it's not the flu. It's much, much worse.
John's stubbornness and deceit might end up costing him his life.

Summary
John is trembling, now. A nearly inaudible whimper escapes his lips.
“Haleh, can you prep two of Ativan?”
“No,” John croaks sharply. “Don’t. I don’t want it.”
“Carter, you’re in pain. We’re going to have to do this again, three more times.”
“I don’t care,” John whispers. “I don’t consent.”
Carter does not escape the shooting in 7x04 unscathed.

Summary
“Ah, Mr. Carter, of course. I believe he is upstairs. He’s been ill. Are you here to check on him?”
“Yeah, something like that… How is he doing?”
“I really couldn’t say, sir. He asked to be left alone when he arrived. I have not seen him.”
Something in Peter’s gut clenches. “So… who’s been checking on him?”
The butler blinks at Peter. “No one, I don’t think? Mr. Carter is a doctor. Surely he can take care of himself?”
Nearly a week after a series of disastrous blood donations at the ER, John Carter is supposed to be recuperating at home. But when Carter misses his follow-up appointment at the hospital, a concerned Peter Benton arrives at Carter's grandparents' house to find that his student's recovery is not going to plan at all.

Summary
A fuck-up at work triggers bad memories and bad habits for John Carter. In the midst of a record heat wave, Carter goes for a punishing run on his family's property, with terrible consequences. Peter Benton to the rescue.
He puts his fingers to Carter’s neck, and is horribly unsurprised at the weak, thready, and extremely rapid pulse he feels beneath the skin. Tachycardic. Very tachycardic.
A hand on John’s forehead is all but confirmation of Peter’s fears. His face is blazing hot, more like touching a furnace than human skin.
Heat stroke.

Summary
John was a few feet away from the admit desk, the voice getting louder with every step he took, when he saw him. Jerry was nodding his head lazily at a man who was talking, talking, talking. His voice, the one John recognized, grew more agitated with every second until he was bordering on yelling. But all John could focus on was his face. He knew that face.
A suffocating feeling of dread bloomed in his stomach and spread up to his throat until he felt like he couldn't breathe. A wave of nausea threatened to drown him as he took a step back in an attempt to get away from that face. That voice. But, to the surprise of no one, he backed right into Deb and knocked the tray she was holding out of her hands. Metal hit the ground with a loud clanging that caught the attention of everyone within twenty feet, including that voice.
