Summary
Michaela’s fingers, which are a bit cold, graze the inside of her wrist. “It’s not innocent like this.” She whispers now too, fingers slide up her forearm.
That certainly doesn’t feel innocent to Francesca, who bites down on her lip to suppress a whimper at the contact she’s not at all used to.
Most touches did not feel as Michaela’s fingers do now, tracing across the inside of her arm, pushing up the sleeve of her dress so that skin can meet skin in some distracting sort of way that immediately sparks a new melody in Francesca’s head. As her fingers dance in what is supposed to be an innocent action across the soft skin of her forearm, she is finding it harder and harder to breathe in any air.
“Many nights in France I found places full of the kind of touch that you cannot possibly imagine.” Michaela is still watching every feature on her face, so closely that it would make her self-conscious about it if she wasn’t so distracted by the way her careful fingers dance across her skin. “That is the most wicked thing I can tell you of, something so ruinous that even if I had ever wanted to be a debutante, I would not have the chance.”

She wondered how Jackie was doing, she liked to think that she found herself a rich boyfriend in Beverly Hills and was living the high life, Jackie is pretty, surely someone would scout her for modeling or something even if she was short. Maybe she’ll let herself loose and Shauna will see her in magazines like Playboy, like how it happened to Pamela Anderson or something.
(But those dreams are better than the nightmares where Jackie is laying dead in the streets of Hollywood, barely recognizable and her pigmentation light blue – an aftermath of some drug Shauna can’t even think of even in her worst nightmares, people just passing her by, and she’s not even bothering to ask for help because nobody would come.)
She wakes up crying every single time.

“It’ll take much more than me to like, break you, you know.” Shauna says, and she doesn’t know why she says it. Maybe it’s to reassure, to take some of the blame away from herself, to say, I can hurt you because you can take it, you always do. without actually saying it. “You’re stronger than that.”
A bitter, humorless laugh escapes Jackie’s lips and Shauna reacts to it like shattered glass, zipping straight through Shauna’s ribs and right into her lungs until each breath needs considerable effort to take. She crosses her arms as if to keep her heart from falling off her chest but there are tears in Jackie's eyes now and it’s no use, Shauna’s heart slips. “You know me so well, Shauna.” Her words are laced heavily with sarcasm, poison dripping like honey from her lips.
“Maybe I don’t,” Shauna says, and it sounds an awful lot like defeat. “Maybe you don’t.”
“Yeah,” Jackie acquiesces, and Shauna feels it reverberate around the hollowness in her chest where her heart is supposed to be. “Maybe we don’t."
