Summary
Tails had seen how Sonic reacted to Infinite’s reappearance. The way his breathing hitched, the way his usually strong legs shook like they were trying to keep him from running away even more than they were trying to keep him upright. Tails wasn’t great at reading people — never had much experience with people at all when he was younger — but he knew his kid. And he knew that he wouldn’t die happy until he’d personally mauled the jackal’s face into a fine paste for whatever he’d done to Sonic.
Later, though. First he had to get Sonic out of the path of danger. 'Later' never came.

Sixteen-year-old Miles "Tails" Prower throws himself into Null Space so that eight-year-old Sonic the Hedgehog doesn’t have to. Two weeks pass, and he’s freed. Only issue is that it’s by now sixteen-year-old Sonic.
Tails doesn’t mind being back. He doesn’t mind that the people he loved are now seven to eight years older than they should be. The only thing he does mind is that he can’t readjust to it as quickly as they deserve.

Miles "Tails" Prower spent the last year travelling the world, making a name for himself after he promised to do so on the Starfall Islands. One small issue. He remembers the flight home. He remembers seeing his workshop on the descent. He most certainly doesn’t remember what led him to wake up in a hospital bed. His brilliant intellect tells him something has gone terribly wrong. He hopes it’s not an issue with the Tornado, but no one seems particularly willing to tell him.

When, like me, you come around to a fandom a pretty long time after its birth or renaissance on a platform, in my case the Sonic fandom on AO3 and Tumblr, there are always those users, works, and all sorts of fan content you just adore. Only issue is, they were usually started and ended long before you showed up. The comments are from long ago, the creator went silent, on and on.
I feel so incredibly lucky to be on this platform at the same time as PigPyro. "Miles // Tails" is such a phenomenal collection of Tails-centric fics, I literally cannot sing its praises enough. Every work in this series leaves me with a big dumbass smile on my face and a big 'awwhhh man i wish i wrote that first!' thought in my mind. PigPyro gotta be one of my favourite strangers on the internet.

Summary
For as long as Tails can remember, Sonic's always made up a different story about how they first met. He's said he found Tails following him through the jungle, that he fell on him from out of a tree, that he caught him fixing his plane... It has become a constant just how inconsistent he can be with all these different versions of the same story. But Sonic's just having a bit of fun and exercising his right as his big brother to mess with him a little. Over the years it became their own silly tradition in a way.
Until Tails realizes the real reason why Sonic doesn't tell it right.
Time isn't a straight line, and the stitches holding their story together are a little uneven, but like Sonic says, the how isn't always what matters. That it happened at all is what does.

so. This is the greatest Sonic the Hedgehog fanfiction of all time. My jest friend Retro has taken the horribly unoptimised, nonsensical storyline that is Sonic lore, and woven it into a new story that incorporates the characters and events of multiple generations of Sonic media, in a way that even a Chaos-worshipping canon ignorer such as myself can enjoy.
