They are both silent for a long moment, regarding each other. Eventually, Deb turns her own bespectacled eyes back to the medical charts she has on her hand, whispering. “I am not even supposed to do this, Shauna. The Taylors aren’t even here yet. This is a huge breach. But…I just can’t. Not when…” For the first time, her mother’s composure slips. Her knuckles are pale, as though she is doing everything she can to hold herself together. “Look, I came to get you because Jackie is still with us now. “
A great deal of foreboding was lifted off Shauna’s shoulders at her mother’s words, replaced with sheer relief. The weightlessness does not last long though because Deb Shipman’s grips the door handle a bit too hard and quickly adds.
“... I just don’t know for how long.”
