Jack had thrown his head back and laughed while David cursed his pale complexion; it made the inevitable blush that much more visible. Though whether it was because of the question or the infectious smile that had lit up Jack’s face, he refused to think about.

“Tell me, what are you doing in this town?” The bartender pulled down the pant leg, but still rested his hand against the side of Shoto’s knee, keeping his legs spread slightly to avoid the wounds from being pressed against each other.
The touch may have been tender, but Shoto still couldn’t help the slight burn of his cheeks as he gripped either end of the table chair. The man had been kind to him so far, this much Shoto could say. However, no amount of kindness from a stranger would ever bring him to divulge his mission so easily. Shoto remained silent on the issue, figuring his stubbornness would get the point across.
Unexpectedly, however, the bartender didn’t take his hand away, nor did he make any attempt to leave Shoto be. He simply stroked his thumb against the surface of Shoto’s knee and tried, once again, “Won’t you tell me your story?”
There is beauty in love; there is serenity in loyalty. These are two things that are constant. And yet when Shoto is sent to a rural town to exterminate the demonic presence that has taken refuge there, he finds that perhaps he's never actually known where his loyalties truly lie.
