    Summary

When a grief-stricken Todd Anderson moves to New York City, he plans on keeping his head down. He’s in no state to do much more than write, study for grad school, pick up a part-time job, read poetry, stay numb, and carry on.

That plan begins to unravel the night he stumbles into a bar called The Dead Poets Society, a dim, welcoming place that hosts open-mic nights, poetry slams, and live music.

It’s owner, Neil Perry, kind, caring, charismatic, carrying deep scars of his own, offers Todd a job. Slowly, Neil and his eccentric circle of friends begin to draw Todd out of his shell in a way that once felt impossible.

Friendships, art, and a kind of care Todd has never quite known how to ask for begin to soften the edges of his broken heart, and for the first time, he allows himself to imagine a future he never thought he’d be permitted to have.

But grief has teeth, and it isn’t quite finished with him yet.

    Summary

After Neil Perry’s death, Todd Anderson learns that grief follows.

    “—Fucking idiots—”

He doesn’t remember deciding to move.
Only the sound of laughter, Neil’s name said wrong,
and his fist connecting before his fear could stop it.

Welton does not soften after tragedy. It sharpens. Todd’s silence becomes an invitation, his stammer a spectacle, his closeness to Neil a weapon others use long after Neil is gone. He learns how to endure, how to walk away, how to swallow words, how to disappear just enough to be able to control himself, to not snap.

    Until one day, he doesn’t.

    Summary

“I don’t think this one should drink anymore.” Charlie said sombrely, easing Neil safely onto the sofa next to Todd, before perching wobblily onto the arm rest. Now they were closer, Todd could smell the almost fuel-like fumes of liquor rolling off them, scenting their clothes and rapid, puffing breaths. Todd wondered how far they’d walked; cabs were few and far between in their part of town, but it was a Saturday, and still fairly early, so it shouldn’t have been that unlikely. “He’s already done enough stupid things tonight.”

“Stupi-what did you guys do?” Todd’s eyes widened and he sat up, almost spilling his coffee in surprise. They’d only been gone four hours! What misadventures could be crafted in less than a quarter of a day? Neil didn’t seem to share his concern, and was in fact lightly sniggering, leaning back into the sofa cushions and lolling his head back. Todd thought he saw a wince flash across his face, and he cupped a hand to his ribs almost protectively.

Neil acts impulsively when drunk, Todd worries about his boys, and Charlie's just happy to be here.

    Summary

Neil Perry was six years old the first time he felt the sting of his father’s cruel words seep like poison into his skin. In a local supermarket in the small town of Wilmington, Vermont that the Perrys called home, the neatly stacked apples on the quaint wooden display were fresh and crisp.
“Rose, what are you doing still holding his hand in public like that? He’s in the first grade now, he ought to start to become more independent. Boys don’t hold their mother’s hands at this age,” he sneered.

    ☆☽☆

Todd Anderson knew all about shame. If there was one feeling that always returned to him like home, year after year as he got older, it was shame. Shame for feeling different. Shame for hardly being able to get a sentence out without stuttering. Shame for being inferior, inferior to Jeffrey.

A mostly canon-compliant DPS story, following the major events of the movie, but focusing more on the inner thoughts of characters (mostly Neil and Todd). Focuses on Neil and Todd's relationship, Todd's issues with anxiety, Neil's issues with depression and not being able to follow his own path.
