Because Elliot was her partner, her best friend. Sometimes he felt like her other, better half. But he was not her boyfriend, fiance or husband.

Maureen squeezed her tighter than the others and whispered, “Promise me you’ll take care of him.”
What could she do but agree? It didn’t matter that they’d be divorcing as soon as the ink on the adoption papers was dry. As far as the rest of the world was concerned this was not only a long time coming but written in the stars.

She’d be lying to herself if she said having him ask about her ass didn’t make her stomach flip end over end, especially paired with the smirk on his face as he stepped through the door. It was the kind of smirk that conveyed immense relief at her being alive, and a fondness they hadn’t quite put a label on yet.

This fic came into existence because I love the idea of Elliot fussing over Olivia on their trip back from Ohio. I imagine he's insufferable and very much acting as Nurse Stabler. And maybe she actually likes it?
