Summary
“...I’m… sore,” Wolfwood eventually says, sounding out the word tentatively. Vash’s eyes widen, and he bends his arm, already beginning to lever himself upright with his elbow. “‘S fine—we were just on the road for a while longer than I planned is all.”
“Wolfwood, I’m s—”
“If you say you’re sorry to me I’m gonna hit you,” Wolfwood warns. “I just—I’d feel wrong askin’ you for a massage without offering anything in return, so I thought we could trade off. You do me and I do you.”
The apologetic look vanishes from Vash’s face, leaving something more assessing in its place. He tilts his head, arguably with a neutral expression, but his eyes are so intense it’s hard to feel anything about him is ‘neutral’ in the first place. Wolfwood shifts his weight and swallows. As if he knows what to do with himself when Vash looks at him most of the time, but he feels weirdly exposed having laid his cards on the table, like Vash could just pore through the innermost contents of his mind and read them all out.
Eventually, Vash smiles, and Wolfwood knows he’s been had.
“You’re worried about me.”

Vash The Stampede is usually talked about in a negative light. Granted, the only things most of the general public knew about him were negatives. The way he destroyed towns he moved through, the hundreds of thousands he'd left homeless, people getting harmed (but never killed!) around him. But the truth is, he really is a swell guy if you get to know him!
Or, well, if you got to know him before the cold storms hit.

“Are you… purring?”
“What?! No!” Vash exclaims as he whips his head around, a high blush on his cheeks. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
Wolfwood narrows his eyes. He reaches out and runs a hand along Vash’s other, uninjured wing. The effect is instant, Vash practically melting into the touch and letting out a purr loud enough to rival Angelina II’s crappy motor.
“Holy shit, you purr.”
“Shut up, no I don’t!” Vash whines, still clearly purring.
Vash gets hurt when he uses his wings to fly him and Wolfwood off a cliff during a confrontation with bounty hunters. Wolfwood discovers a new, interesting fact about plant physiology.

Summary
For over a century, Vash has kept Knives shut out, refused him the bond they once shared as children. It's for that reason that he knows something is terribly, horrifyingly wrong when Vash's voice spills into his head, calling for help. He is not surprised that it is humans who have once again transgressed against his kind and he vows to never let Vash fall to them again.
However, Vash cannot be left alone and Knives still has plans that need seeing to. Enter Nicholas D. Wolfwood, assassin, Conrad's favored pet project, and Vash's (very temporary) new companion.

Summary
Vash felt like he was choking on his guilt. He slapped his cheeriest smile on his face and didn't meet anyone's eyes. He saw their faces and the buildings and cobble stones, new water canals and gardens and solar panels, all disappearing in white light. Vash's ears were ringing. Wolfwood said something to him but he shook his head and walked faster. He was pretty sure his knee was sprained by his ungraceful landing. He was pretty sure he'd almost killed everyone here.
10 years after the end of Trimax an incident triggers the Angel Arm. Vash deals with the consequences of being a pacifist who is a gun.

“What is this?” Wolfwood asks.

“Yeah.”
Vash lets out a little breath. “Oh. It means I’m dying.”
Wolfwood jolts. He digs his fingers into the dark hair, tips back Vash’s head so their eyes meet.
“What?”
Vash smiles at him. “It means I’m dying. Slowly. But–surely.”
“What do you mean, Vash?”
“I’m a Plant, Wolfwood. I don’t have infallible energy, just like my sisters. Every time I use the arm it pulls on reserves."
...“Aren’t you scared?” Wolfwood asks. “Doesn’t it scare you?”
“No,” Vash says. “It doesn’t.”
Wolfwood leans down. He kisses that black streak and the black hair below it that until now was so innocent. Vash leans into it, hums in the back of his throat.
“Wolfwood,” he sighs, and sighs, and makes Wolfwood ache inside. “Don’t worry about it.”
“All I do is worry about you,” Wolfwood mutters. “Got you burrowed in my brain.”
And ribs and marrow, and bitten around his heart chewing into its vulnerable core.

He knows Wolfwood likes to hear the creak of the farmhouse floor marking where Vash is and the squeak of the screen door when he leaves, so he’s not quiet getting his stuff together for his supply trip.

So he keeps Angelina mostly parked out on the street and tries not to notice the way that Vash looks from him to the bike sometimes. Like he has something to say.
That happens a lot, with Vash; his mouth will open and Wolfwood can see the gears turning in his stupid spiky head but nothing comes out. Vash seals his lips closed with a smile and a nod.
Wolfwood’s not sure how he ended up here, not sure how he ended up being a person who pays attention to the way Vash’s lips move. It’s not the life he had before meeting Vash, nor the one he expected.

Summary
Wolfwood ignores his gripe. “You’ve been moving weird all day. What happened? Are you hiding an injury? Spill it,” he adds, when Vash starts to speak. Vash shuts his mouth with a telltale click, then lets out a huff, giving Wolfwood a particularly grumpy look as he turns around and begins the tedious process of unbuttoning his duster. Rather than continue to push, Wolfwood folds his arms across his chest and waits. Taps his foot, even. He’s fine with being obnoxious about this, so long as he gets results. Vash very rarely gives unless you needle him a little. Lucky that Wolfwood’s so good at needling.
Finally, Vash drops his arms and allows his jacket to slide to the floor. The cause of his discomfort is immediate evident. White feathers have sprung over his exposed back, the length of his non-prosthetic arm, peeking out from the neck of his shirt. They bulge from his pants, his long, strappy boots. As Vash turns to face him again, Wolfwood sees that quills are even peeking out on his cheeks, unfurling before his very eyes as Vash gives him this incredibly miserable wet cat look, folding his arms across his stomach.

The other man grins, tilting his head to one side slightly, “You’re in luck, then,” he says, “We have both. Rosa’ll be happy to have you, the roof needs work and the windows are all drafty. I’m not much help, considering,” he gestures at his empty shirtsleeve. “There’s a room upstairs, opposite mine.”
Wolfwood raises an eyebrow, “You sure? You just met me.” He takes a sip of his whiskey, enjoying the way the burn flows down his throat.
The other man shrugs, “I'm a good judge of character,” he says, and Wolfwood can’t help but snort.
Wolfwood gives him a look and then unbuttons his coat and shoves aside his jacket to show his shoulder holster. “Still think that?”
The other man shrugs again, “You’d be stupid not to, traveling around. Like I said, I’m a good judge of character. You’re a nice guy, I can tell.”
Wolfwood takes another sip of his whiskey before shrugging his jacket and coat back into place and stretching out his hand, “Nicholas D. Wolfwood,” he says.
The other man smiles and shakes his hand with a surprisingly steady grip. “Eriks,” he says.

Then it’s quiet again as Vash leans back on his hand and just takes the time to look at Wolfwood as he reads. The child sunrise flooding in through the window paints him in warm hues, the pinks, oranges, and golds mixing with his beautiful brown skin to create a stunning tableau. He seems absolutely radiant in the early morning light.
Vash can’t help the way his breath catches at the gorgeous sight now that he’s had the opportunity to really appreciate it. He feels so incredibly blessed to be allowed to witness Wolfwood in all his beauty like this, to have him feeling comfortable and safe enough to be bare and vulnerable even after having a difficult night, to partake in these quiet, intimate moments with him day after day, tomorrow after tomorrow.
How did Vash get so lucky?
