Shane starts noticing a bunch of odd things about the Farmer. For starters, they seem to know where Shane and the rest of the town's residents are no matter where they go, and they always seem to know exactly what to gift them, even if they've never given any indication that it's their favorite thing. More than that, nobody seems able to remember their name, and Shane keeps having dreams he can hardly understand.
Also also, they keep gifting Shane things, so clearly there was something wrong with them.

Summary
The Mechaman suit, with the Astral Pulse by extension, was always conscious. It's just been sitting dormant, content at recording and collecting data from it's pilots silently as a passive tool.
But by the third generation of its pilots... it foresees that pilot Blue will not last long alone, and it doesn't like that.
Or: The suit is 'alive'. There's some bullshit allegory here somewhere about keeping control, but Robert's more focused on being a protector and not letting the machine overtake his job.

Slowly, Robert stands up. He’s shivering. He looks sick. His eyes are glassy, and Invisigal blinks. He hadn’t looked like that just a few moments ago. What the hell is he coming down with that it’s hitting him so hard and fast? . The door to his cell is unlocked. He doesn’t fight when he is roughly grabbed and shoved into the hallway. Robert looks over at Invisigal.
“Please,” he mumbles. He’s hunching forward, like he’s going to start trying to crawl out of his own skin. A million alarms are going off in Invisigal’s head, but there’s nothing she can do about them, “Whatever happens, stay in the cells.”

Summary
Things have been good— besides some lingering regret over not killing Shroud and the careful consolidating of corporatizing Mecha Man with dispatch work, Robert’s been alright. Hell, he even bought a bed recently.
Things spiral pretty quickly when he’s a victim of some sort of bizarro mugging and gets turned into a cat. Surprisingly, it doesn’t even rank in the top ten worst experiences of his life.
