Even beneath his firm cowl, Clark could see the deepening frown marring Batman’s face. The look not unlike concern glinting in his eyes gave Clark pause. He turned back around and stared at the cooling water on the stove.
It was going to be spaghetti. At least, it was until he realised he was out of noodles, only had half a cup of flour left, and no tomatoes for sauce.
“Diana thought—” his uninvited guest paused a moment, before he cleared his throat and started over, “you took a nasty hit. Today.”
“Is that what this is about?” Clark almost wanted to laugh.

It was never truly silent for Clark. He could hear the steady beat of Bruce’s heart, the low thrum of electricity from the lights… Yet it all sounded muted, even to him, and the silence that washed over it filled his ears with the deafening ring of soundlessness. It was slowly driving him to the brink of madness.
“How long do you think it’ll take to rebuild everything?” Clark finally asked, his voice a tad harsher—more forceful—than he’d intended thanks to his desperation to break the infuriating quiet between them.
Bruce must’ve understood, though, because he didn’t comment on his tone. Instead, he heaved out a loud breath and leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees, hands cupping his mug of tea tight enough to turn his knuckles white. That—his grip on his mug—was the only indication he gave of how much everything had effected him.

Summary
There weren’t many he let see this side of him. The side that actually cared. Children, mostly, were the ones he let down his guard for—to let them know it would be okay, they were safe with him, he was there to help. It was rare someone closer to his age got under his skin enough to drag out this quiet, simple, genuine side of him.

A wolf whistle echoed through the conference room behind Bruce. Colour flooded Clark’s face. He dropped his hands from Bruce’s hair in a rush and quickly helped him pull his cowl back on before Bruce backed up and helped him to his feet off the table.
The awkward tension was thick enough to cut.

He pitched his voice lower when he spoke again, voice more of a murmur than anything, “I’ve wanted to help you for a very long time—” Clark took a sharp, aborted breath. “—so, tell me what you need, so I can.”
A moment passed in tense silence, before Clark slumped down, his shoulders sagging.

Then he took a deep breath and he changed. He ironed out every fold in his posture and his face until he looked like Superman again. His shoulders were broad, his gaze was confident, and his smile showed no sign of embarrassment or fear.
It’s genuinely uncomfortable to watch.
Especially since Bruce knows that change. He’s seen it in the mirror before entering parties or nightclubs. He’s always referred to it, internally, as 'putting on my better face.' The façade is his least favourite part of the day, ranking just below 'getting punched by supervillains.'
The idea that Superman is just Kal's better face, that would explain a lot.
It would also mean Bruce isn't alone.
