Summary
Nicholas D. Wolfwood is the older brother of Hopeland orphanage. With Livio out having adventures and the other older Hopeland kids finding jobs in town, Nicholas is the only one left to help Melanie with keeping everyone alive. He'll probably become the next leader as well once Melanie retires, if he doesn't die from fighting human traffickers first.
But that destiny was thrown off when a wandering doctor stumbles through the Hopeland doors: Vash Saverem.
Helping Nicholas recovery from his broken leg, the two grow closer together than Nicholas ever imagined being with anyone. The Alpha is kind and gentle, patient when he isn't full of bullshit. Nicholas knows there's something Vash is hiding from him.

Summary
It goes without saying that an orphan like Nicholas has never seen a Plant. From illustrations and descriptions, he imagines it as some sort of bulb or glowing ball suspended in a tank. They’re so rare and protected these days, kept away from the grubby little hands of anyone who doesn’t live in a major city.
But somehow, Nicholas knows what he’s looking at now isn’t a Plant. Even from the other end of the room he can see arms and legs and something human in there, swathed in something else.
Nicholas, all at once, is overcome with a sensation he’s only ever felt once before. Looking at the thing in the tank, his voice dies in his throat, overcome with a need to be quiet, to not disturb it. Not quite fear, but something so reverent every animal instinct in his brain begs him to obey. That not-Plant is something else. Not human. Not worm. Not alive and not dead. Something other.
