Searching for a hobby to occupy his mind, he meets Mick, the president of the college Chess Club. Suddenly, Jeremy has no idea why he had ever begun to think he knew what his life would be like.

Windshield wipers click, metronomic. The world blurs by—a series of cosmic smears flowing into one dark tangle. Scout wants to ask if he means it, if next time isn’t just a neat fold they can tuck this into, but the question feels redundant already.
Instead, he says, “Yeah. Next time.” It's a soft landing, a cushion under the sharp edges of expectation. It leaves space for things to breathe; he wonders if that’s what Sniper wants.
