Gabriel put so much thought into the power structure he wanted to be wedded to, but it would never so much as cross his mind to consider a relationship with an alpha. AA couples didn’t exist. Hell, their AA friendship was rare enough. In some countries, an omega could claim multiple alphas and betas to form an old-fashioned pack, yet even those tended to only have one alpha. American society was built on OBA marriages.
Jack knew he would never be bonded to Gabriel. But no matter how many times he reminded himself of this, he just couldn’t seem to stamp out the tiny wish flickering in his heart.

Jack couldn’t remember exactly when he’d instructed Athena to stop observing his and Gabriel’s meetings. If you could call them meetings. Gabriel would barge into Jack’s office, spitting acid about some limitation on Blackwatch’s resources and Jack would fail to keep his cool, deride some shady tactic Blackwatch used on a mission they weren’t even supposed to go on. Gabriel would yell about necessity and Jack would yell about consequences. They’d both be snarling into each other’s faces, voices loud, blood spiking hot, violence pushing up against their skin.
By the time Gabriel stalked out, they’d have solved nothing. Jack’s pulse would be pounding and the back of his shirt would be damp with sweat. It was, Jack loathed to admit, the only thing that elevated his heartrate these days.

His hands slid from Jack's shirtfront to the sides of his neck. Callused fingertips trailed with terrifying gentleness over the tender skin below his ears and the stubbly line of his jaw. A thumb grazed the swell of Jack’s lower lip.
Gabriel needed to reel Jack out of that Strike Commander shell. Just this one last time.
