Summary
Louise wonders if all writers are extremely romantic, or if it’s just a quirk of the few she’s read. Of Jane Austen or Emily Bronte or Daphne Luckenbill. Though, maybe Austen or Bronte aren’t like that outside of their stories.
Daphne, though, definitely is. Louise should know. They’ve been exchanging unsigned correspondence (Louise’s request) for months on end, and the recent topic of love, Louise asking specifically about her and Silas, has been…illuminating. It’s become obvious that Daphne has an abundance of love, and an ease and bravery with which she gives it. Louise is trying to understand that ease, trying to look at it with something other than wistfulness, and with a fear that she physically cannot conquer.
Louise cannot imagine herself loving in the same way Daphne loves. No matter how wonderful Daphne makes that love sound, how painless she makes it seem.
OR, Through a series of letters from Daphne, Louise reflects on the nature of what kind of love she wants.

Everything Harrowhark hates is here: there is nothing remotely fun in being trapped in a fast-moving machine, nothing appealing about people screaming at her to buy sugary pastries shaped like skulls. The smell of the place alone, saccharine and vaguely chemical, makes her ill. Everyone wears hideous, bright clothes and brighter, cloying smiles.
A jostle of the shoulder pushes her forward from where she stands, in a massive throng of people waiting for their turn in what’s labeled as the Lyctoral Loop. It is a long, spiraling track, with little, black carts that zoom along it, two to a cart. The line for this ride is long, stretching far behind Harrowhark to the point where she can’t see where the line ends. The line is bordered by deep red velvet rope, and flashing signs that read Ride the Lyctoral Loop! And A Ride So Good You’ll Never Want To Get Off!

OR, Yoshiki knows he can't ever love "Hikaru" like he did the original, that this thing that took his place can't ever truly be Hikaru, or love him in a way deemed normal. He can't bring himself to give "Hikaru" up anyway.

He misses the beach. The real beach. The current one is mostly soil with a lacy veneer of nuclear ash, clammy and streaky and hilariously radioactive, which is a real bummer when he thinks about it too hard. But the twenty-five meter sea level rise that came when all the freshwater ice finished melting around the mid-century mark ate away at the shoreline, rolled in between the skyscrapers on a new tide, swallowed up all the people who couldn't afford to move anywhere else. Have you seen the rent rates lately?
And then John accidentally'd the entire nuclear stockpile of the planet Earth.
