Summary
“I was thinking back to how things were.” Before the reveal, Kafka doesn't say. Doesn't need to. “I kind of miss those times.”
“Oh, boy. Reminiscing already, are we? That's just too sweet,” Hoshina teases. Footsteps soften, mouth cradling a pensive smile. “I'll admit though - they're some pretty good memories. Let them guide you forward.”
The words break gently over Kafka, a wave worth chasing along the shoreline as it retreats. And there it is. Tangible proof of everything rattling his chest. Tugging him deeper.
“And who knows. If you're lucky, you'll get to make more.”
“Yeah,” Kafka manages weakly, words slipping off his tongue too fast. “I like the sound of that.”
“Well-” Hoshina pivots on his heels, paving the way once more. The mirth and mystery in his voice lingers. “Best keep your eyes peeled. Sometimes, the best things slip by. If you’re not careful, you could miss them…”
It makes Kafka believe he's already brave, on the verge of his becoming.

"Can I have your number?"
Soshiro tosses the phone back. It lands in the middle of Kafka's chest with a soft thud.
"Absolutely not."
With an energised grunt, Kafka throws himself onto the ground. Flopped out like a starfish starving for the ocean that refuses to wash over them. It's so silly. Worse, Soshiro is completely taken by it.
"But I'm really great at texting!" Oh lord, he's pouting now. "I have so many cool things to share."
Shuffling onto the edge of the bench, Soshiro pokes at him. If Kafka wants his number, he has to work a little for it.
"Like what?" He snaps his fingers. "Come on. Give me some examples."
"Argh. Don't rush me, it's hard to think under pressure!" A beat passes. "Just - you know, stuff…”
Having Kafka in his pocket is comedy gold. It's also everything Soshiro ever wanted.

"Hoshina-" Kafka grits his teeth. Sucks in a ragged gasp of air. "I'm sorry."
The water bottle is pushed gently against his face, right along the fading tear tracks. Seconds stretch out only to shatter around them. Time a poignant wheel that won't stop turning in circles. What they need right now is a line to cross. But they're formless in the fallout. Still, Hoshina persists. Pushes back against the splintering moment.
“Come on. Drink."
It makes sense, that Hoshina would love as fiercely as he fights.
