Silence.
Xie Lian slowly poked his small ferret head out of the leaf pile.
“Why are you giving me free eggs?” he asked suspiciously, one of the leaves now balanced on his head like a bamboo hat.
It is forbidden to ask what a person turns into at night.
By day, they remain human. When the sun sets: an animal form, unique to each person. Day and night are separate worlds and separate lives. It is the greatest, most unbreakable taboo to know a person’s nightform. And even more dangerous for Xie Lian, as he is cursed.
But one night in the forest, he meets a fox. A very powerful fox, who seems hell bent on protecting him at all costs. And the very next day, he meets a man calling himself San Lang.

“You must forgive the dawn chorus, Whiteflower. The birds consider it good luck.”
“What’s good luck?” he said, baffled.
“TO SEE LONG WORMS IN THE MORNING, LORD’S FRIEND-”

Xie Lian breathed shallowly. San Lang's face was so close, and he was so lovely. He pressed his nose to his, the way he'd done when feeling particularly affectionate as Whiteflower. San Lang noticed, grinning.
"Are you going to bite my ears, too?"
Xie Lian huffed. "No."
"Why not?"
"That's not how humans show that they...you know."
"Ah. I've spent so little time as a human, gege. Won't you show this wild creature what to do?"
