Hate waiting at traffic lights? Yeah, me too. Good thing the Netherlands has smarter traffic lights to make sure that happens as little as possible. It's amazing what you can do when you design to move as many people as possible, instead of as many cars as possible.

Why We Won't Raise Our Kids in Suburbia (and moved to the Netherlands instead) by Not Just Bikes

I was always told, growing up, that the suburbs (of Canada) are a good place to raise children. But I've come to appreciate the importance of independence for the a child's development, something that's nearly impossible in today's car-dependent suburbs. It was pretty clear that suburbia was not right for our kids, so we moved to the Netherlands instead.

Summary
Most of us want to do the right thing when it comes to the environment. But things aren't as simple as opting for the paper bag, says sustainability strategist Leyla Acaroglu. A bold call for us to let go of tightly-held green myths and think bigger in order to create systems and products that ease strain on the planet.

Bookmarker's Notes
Aka how to make things more efficient/sustainable by improving their design, not just focusing on making the materials of the product more sustainable but the product design itself. So efficiency is built into the way the product works and is used to make it more sustainable.
For example designing electric kettles that encourage you to only boil the water you actually need so you don't waste energy or simply allow you to boil one cup of water without worrying you'll damage the kettle by underfilling it. Speaking from experience, if you don't typically boil water while people are sleeping, stove top whistling kettles are a great way to get around that issue since they don't have minimal fill lines. Getting into the habit of filling a kettle literally via mug fulls and asking those around you if they want hot water before you turn on the jug* is also a good way to heat up the right amount of water and avoid double boiling the kettle because someone else sees you with boiled water and decides they want some.
*This may already be common in some places but I'm not from a big tea drinking country so it wasn't common to ask if anyone else wanted tea/coffee unless there are guests or it's a gathering of some kind. So it was interesting to see how it went from a sustainability thing for me and then was taken up by others for a variety of reasons until it became a common thing people did. The language also changed from 'Would anyone like a cup of tea/coffee?' to a more casual 'Would anyone like hot water?' since everyone drinks different things and would make their own drinks as desired once the water was boiled.

A breath of fresh air of solution focused thinking rather than doom day warnings. A film that explores solutions that already exist, that could be used to create a better future in what the creator calls 'fact based dreaming'.

Hello, and thank you for your interest in contributing to the otwarchive project!
You are very welcome to submit drive-by pull requests for the AO3 software. In addition to our Contributing Guidelines, you can find our Commit Policy and Coding Standards on this wiki. Please note that we have a backlog of approved issues and verified bugs in our AO3 project on JIRA and fixes for these will be given priority over pull requests for features which are not on our roadmap.
We recommend using our Vagrant development environment to work on the Archive, but we also provide instructions for installing the otwarchive software on the OS of your choice:
Set up the Archive on OS X using Homebrew
Set up the Archive on Linux
Set up the Archive on Windows
We also offer web-based development environments to official OTW volunteers. Open positions will be listed on the Volunteer page at the Organization for Transformative Works' website. This wiki is publicly editable! Unless a page says that it should only be edited by official OTW volunteers, feel free to edit.

This was a fun read! Interesting to know what exactly the volunteers do, and makes you appreciate them more for all the hard work that's put in ^__^I was wondering if you guys use github/gitlab to store your codebase? If yes, could you share your experience with it?
-
sarken:
We do! We occasionally use a self-hosted instance of GitLab, but 99.9% of the time, we use GitHub. You can find us at otwcode/otwarchive or by following the version link in the Development section of the Archive's footer. In the very early days, AD&T used Google Code to host the code base, but that was before I became a volunteer, so I don't have anything to compare GitHub to, nor did I experience the migration process. I find both GitHub and GitLab straightforward to use, though, and it's nice to see new folks drop by our GitHub repo with bug fixes.
Actually, it's more than nice: it's rewarding. Our documentation used to be entirely internal, but one of my pet projects has been moving some of it onto our our GitHub wiki to encourage more contributions, and once GitHub started offering them, AD&T staffer Ariana got the ball rolling on adding contributing guidelines and a pull request template. And thanks to AD&T and Systems staffer james_, we also offer a Vagrant development environment anyone can use. So it's been pretty satisfying to see the work we've quietly been doing pay off in the form of more casual contributions from other GitHub users -- some of them are even working on adding Docker support, which might encourage even more in the future.

I've been so crazy busy between school and running [community profile] pod_aware that I haven't properly had time to make things for it, so I'm going to use this as an excuse to make a post I've been meaning to for a long time now. I know I've talked about my home made recording studio a lot, but now I'm going to do a proper post.
I actually live right down the street from the Ottawa airport, which is convenient when I get lost in the city (just follow the airport signs!) but is not so great when you're a podficcer. I also live in a row home with really thin walls that you can hear my neighbours sneeze through.
I recorded a number of podfics sitting in my living room, pausing to allow planes to go by or one of my roommates to make a run for the kitchen or stopping altogether while cursing my neighbour and his loud music. I had kind of wistfully talked about having a real recording studio, and kronos999, being the awesome friend and roommate that she is, started researching it.

They made a podfic booth but the pictures also really interesting when considering a set up for somewhere small like a walk in closet where you can't comfortably stand up in, a chair and something that can at least act like a mini desk is key. Also having the desk wide or long enough to fit all the stuff you need it on for your preferred layout. eg. mic in front of the computer. Also light.

If the only difference between a piece of fanfiction and a bestselling novel is the changing of character names and places, then is the deletion stories without warning something that should be bigger news?

Academics who study fandom regularly find that fans are willing to criticize themselves and their heroes, particularly as their fandom evolves over the course of their life. Laura Vroomen’s long-term study of Kate Bush fans and Daniel Cavicchi’s book-length ethnography of Bruce Springsteen fans are both hallmark texts, thanks to the remarkable complexity of their subjects’ thoughts and feelings about what exactly it is that they are doing when they love a pop star. It can be ugly, and they will say so.
-
To criticize something is to take it seriously. This requires knowing it deeply—something that fans are still better at than they get credit for. Which is why the fans willing to call their loved ones “dumb” are the best fans of all.- Bookmarks:

Welcome to podfic_tips! We're here to help people who are recording podfic - audio/mp3 versions of fan fiction stories - and making podfic into podbooks, and things like that. If you need help, or would like to offer help, you've come to the right place!
These are the sort of questions people might want to ask:
Help, I want to make a podfic recording and I don't know where to start!
What program do I need?
I want to buy a microphone, which one's best?
Where can I upload my podfics?
How should I talk to make a good recording?
What's the difference between a podfic and a podbook? How do I make a podbook?
How do I manage to read this story without dying of sheer embarassment and giggling?
[cut for length]... and anything else that you can think of, pretty much! The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.
We try to be very newbie friendly as well as useful for oldbies with technical queries like "Why doesn't this podcast feed validate?" and "What's the lowest sampling rate I can use without degrading the quality too much?" and so forth... everybody was a newbie once.

Summary
Podfic is this awesome fanwork where dedicated fans create audiobooks of fanfic.
The podfic community is still small enough that many in fandom have never heard of this fun fanwork. Those of us that love podfic love it a lot and sometimes we don't take the time to talk about that enough. So [community profile] pod_aware is here to help with both of those things!
How are we going to do this? For one week (November 10-14) every day there will be a topic about podfic, which participants can talk about and/or spread the word about. For each day's topic, we're going to have a little blurb explaining a bit about the daily topic with a link back to the conversation happening.
Those of us who already know about podfic can give our thoughts on the subject, creating a resource for those who don't know about podfic and want to learn more.

"And we're going to spread awareness by making stuff! What kind of stuff? Anything! It doesn't have to be related to podfic at all! You can write fic, you can give recs, you can bake cookies, or just write a post, whatever! All we ask is that you include that little blurb wherever you post your fanwork (and we encourage you to post it anywhere/everywhere). That way fans that have never heard of podfic before can find out what it's all about!"Basically a podfic community full of meta and resources.

A. For whatever reason, the programmers working on GarageBand version 10 left out some keyboard shortcuts, however OS X let's you restore them yourself; see the video for a step-by-step guide.

Summary
So, a while ago, some of my friends and fellow cast members of the @sansukhpodfic asked about how to make and edit podfic on their own. I created this tutorial for them, as a supplement to the resources already posted by the Sansukh mods. In the wake of the most recent @auralphonic episode asking for technical advice on podficcing in Audacity, I thought I would polish this up and post it.
This tutorial explains how, once you have permission to record a story, you go about turning it into a podfic using Audacity. It focuses on technical and logistical details, rather than artistic advice, and is cobbled together from my own experience, my knowledge of the mathematics behind signal analysis, and other people’s tutorials. There’s lots of communities and resources out there that give advice on the artistic side (Auralphonic, for example, has an episode for newbies), which I recommend checking out.
Disclaimer: There is no one standard method of doing this! This is the method I have found gives me the best results, personally, but there may be better ways to do this. I strongly recommend checking out other resources for comparison.
